February Updates - 2018 https://www.nemvia.org/apps/photos/ February Updates - 2018 Preparing The Dock Base - 1 This is actually a good sign. On the top of the display base I am now overlaying the top with Black Velvet. This will help absorb light to give the illusion that the Drydock is floating in space. I will secure the velvet to the base then trim all of the sides. This step means I'm getting very close to finishing this project. The sides of the Panel frames are now supported by two bolt screws from the top of the model base. https://www.nemvia.org/apps/photos/photo?photoID=204851475 204851475 Drydock Hanger Lighting - 1 I've updated the Hanger lighting to use the LED strips. I will replace the lighting on the other hangers as well. The strips have enough details on them to appear to be a part of the Hanger Bay Detailing. https://www.nemvia.org/apps/photos/photo?photoID=204851468 204851468 Drydock Hanger Lighting - 2 I've tried several voltages on the light strips. The 7.5v seams to be the perfect brightness as you will see in the next few photos. https://www.nemvia.org/apps/photos/photo?photoID=204851467 204851467 Drydock Hanger Lighting - 3 Here is the Hanger from a higher angle. https://www.nemvia.org/apps/photos/photo?photoID=204851469 204851469 Drydock Hanger Lighting - 4 Here is a look at the inside of the Hanger. There are three strips of lights. I think they make the Hanger look more authentic. I also added some crewmembers to the deck and around the shuttles. I will put a mirror at the back of the deck to give the hanger more depth. https://www.nemvia.org/apps/photos/photo?photoID=204851473 204851473 Cementing The Saucer - 1 I was going to just use magnets to hold the saucer in place now that all of the wiring and lighting are completed. Unfortunately the top and bottom pieces do not line up exactly, so I decided to seal the saucer up permanently. It will be very difficult to get to any of the lighting once the ship is in the dock. The LEDs should last a lifetime. https://www.nemvia.org/apps/photos/photo?photoID=204851477 204851477 Impulse Engine/Dorsal Repair - 1 Next I've begun some putty work on the Dorsal/Saucer connection. Also the impulse engine piece does not completely meet the sauce, so I took 2 pieces of styrene and re-did the bottom hull of the engine. It will be puttied and sanded then repainted. Also the rear collar of the dorsal needed to be fixed as this also did not look right. https://www.nemvia.org/apps/photos/photo?photoID=204851470 204851470 Impulse Engine/Dorsal Repair - 2 I've also puttied the seams along the nacells becauese of huge gaps that ran along the hull. I know I should have done this a while back, but the model is so huge and difficult to handle and I didn't want to risk the putty cracking or splitting from all of the handleing. But now that I'm about to mount it into the dock the risk is very low. https://www.nemvia.org/apps/photos/photo?photoID=204851471 204851471 Deflector Housing Putty Work - 1 The deflector is also another area I wanted to have access to so I used magnets to hold it in place. However there was a large gap on the port side of the housing due to the way the model was formed. So, I decided to permanently seal this up as well. I then puttied all around the housing and wiped off the excess with a paper tower dipped in thinner to help smooth the putty thus reducing the amount of sanding. https://www.nemvia.org/apps/photos/photo?photoID=204851472 204851472 Deflector Housing Putty Work - 2 Here is a closer look at the Deflector Housing Putty work. The next step is some light sanding and some touch-up paint. https://www.nemvia.org/apps/photos/photo?photoID=204851476 204851476 Hanger Deck Inserts - 1 These inserts are finally in place. Please forgive the bad picture. I need to do some light putty work and some touch-up painting. I should be ready to add this model to the drydock. https://www.nemvia.org/apps/photos/photo?photoID=204851474 204851474
